IS YOUR MATTRESS TOXIN-FREE?

Here is a mattress article without affiliate links! I only endorse the good stuff.

The last thing you want to think about before going to sleep is whether the mattress you’re sleeping on might harm your health. But, this might be the case as several materials used to manufacture mattresses contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other toxins that can affect your health. If you’re renovating your home and giving it a green update to protect the health of your family, make sure you buy completely eco-friendly mattresses. Here’s what you need to know:

What’s Toxic?

Foam and synthetic latex are the most common materials used to manufacture mattresses. Foam is a petroleum-based product and contains polyurethane and other chemicals that off-gas into your home’s air. This is especially harmful coming from a mattress as we’re so close to the off-gassing source for so many hours each day.

What's more, foam is a flammable substance, so the material is doused in a litany of chemical flame retardants, which only adds to its toxicity. Synthetic latex is also petroleum-based and made with styrene and butadiene, both of which are VOCs. These chemicals have been known to cause headaches, fatigue, and damage to the central nervous system.

The Healthy Alternative

Sleeping Organic Mattress
Sleeping Organic 100% Natural Latex Mattress

Give yourself and your family healthy, peaceful sleep with an eco-friendly mattress. Instead of synthetic latex, choose 100% organic, natural latex mattresses. They might be more expensive than the synthetic variety but could potentially save you tens of thousands of dollars on medical bills as they don’t off-gas toxins into the air you breathe. You can also choose from vegan and organic cotton mattresses. Here are two of my favorite green mattresses:

Their vegan mattresses contain no polyurethane foams, polyester, or toxic fire retardants, and to keep things vegan, they use cotton instead of wool.
